Hey Folks,

I've found this site and fell in love with it! While I am unable to afford to pay 60.00 for a theme (single dad, 36, mortgage blah blah blah) I see a lot of knowledge and skill on these forums so thought I would ask.

I'm used to using Wordpress, which I have used for TV show fan sites in the past etc. but I am wanting to start a clan site for an upcoming MMO game and Wordpress just doesn't seem to have all the integrated stuff that I see elsewhere.

I read somewhere on this site that PHPNuke is old and full of holes? So what does someone recommend in terms of a platform to build off of? Essentially I'm looking for something that is capable of handling a theme like the Crysis 2 theme here (which is superb I might add).

Some of the guys I know are using E107 but the themes they are using just look kinda second rate. Sure they are free (which is right in my price range) but it just looks kinda blah.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Yes the orignal PHPNuke is old and full of holes, but the new distro's are new and are getting update or a regular basis. For a clan site nuke evolution extreme will be your best choice as it comes with a lot of mods pre-installed. There are also lots of free themes available for nuke.

Take alook at my clan site Tactical Combat Evolved this is Raven nuke, heavily modded.

Im a raven nuke lover so i dont know any evo sites but im sure when dread reads this he will post where you can get some free evo themes. Hes an nuke Evo lover.

Raven's PHP Nuke is in fact a good distro to go with aswell!
I'm using Raven's myself and loving it aswell. I've not modded much but I did install a few tweaks for certain modules and forums etc.

If you want I could also help you on installing your website if you can't figure it out. I'm willing to do a clean install for only a small fee (which can be agreed upon)

Thanks guys! Yeah I think the founder of this site mentioned something about using Raven Nuke versus PHP Nuke in a forum post he replied to on here. I'll have to look at how it works.

I'll also take a look at Evo. Guess no one on here recommends e107 CMS eh?

I'm pretty sure I can install it without concern as I've done wordpress and things like that before however advanced theme construction of the level found on this site is way beyond me. Too busy fighting fires or being "daddy" for that kinda time sink LOL

Rule out evo, just go for either extreme or ravens. If paying for a theme is too expensive you could go with either a free theme, or if you are skilled in photoshop create your own theme design. I'm sure that there are people willing to help you out with the coding as soon as you have your design ready

As Noto said, I am the Evo lover here. I started with phpnuke originally and then went to RavenNuke, but after about a year of using Raven, I got tired of installing the mods I wanted for my clan, so I went with Evo and have never left. I do recommend that you do look into going with at least a paid host for your website for the free ones out there are going to limit you and more and likely cause issues. I know money is tight, but if you can get a good clan going with members to help support the clan by donations, you should be able to do good.

Thanks man! That is a world of info!!! I'm browsing the Evo Extreme website now as well as your own! I will be using a paid host for sure.

I have a domain that I will experiment with this CMS on and then when it's ready we will all chip in the money, register a proper domain reflecting the clan name and MAYBE purchase a theme from here if we can pool that kinda bling.

I see the Crysis 2 theme works for Evo Extreme so that is a good thing as that is probably the theme I will want to work with and modify. Either that or the new SW:TOR theme. Too bad he couldn't blend elements that I like on each theme LOL

The game isn't due out until summer time so I have some time to experiment and see what all is out there.

Remember you get what you pay for, in both cases they are free, open source products. Both products come with hazards and pretty much as long as you aren't out pi**ing of hackers or script kiddies your site will be fine.

I've been spending time with IPB and VB which are pay for products. Both offer a ton of options and a decent CMS look and feel. Unfortunately, the price versus what you get arent very well aligned. IMHO, both use the work of others to advance their own product. I don't care much for that but the trade off is it's going to take more than a script kiddie to hack your site.

I'm using evo xtreme the current release and haven't had any issues worthy of mentioning. RN is a good product as well, I just don't use it.

Good luck with which ever your choice is.

Relic, it don't matter if you pay for it or not, hackers are out for anything and using that comparison is not fitting. A paid script is not going to give you any more security then a free open source product. if both have active teams always working on the security of there products, then they will be equally when it comes to security. VB is alright but limited and most of everything you need to buy. Not sure about the other one.

If your making a clan site use Xtreme, it has lots of fancy forum mods, and people like playing in forums

I'm not saying Ravens is bad, I love it because its a clean canvas to add what I need

As for paid for scripts, do some research and try all the free ones first Wink

What game do you play, I can convert most of the themes in the shop to any game

I would also like to point out that you do not need to pay for a domain registery.

There are some proper free domain registrars out there with which you can go. for example http://co.cc is a good domain registrar. It allows you to register: www.yourdomain.co.cc (which isn't a bad extension at all IMHO) So that'll save you a few bucks over the course of a year. Meaning you can spend your well earned money on the webhost instead. And yes I'm saying spending your well earned money on the webhost, because free webhosts do indeed cause more trouble than they are worth.
