Post Video Tutorials Posted: Thu Apr 05, 2007 6:22 am

Hey floppy. I have an idea and am willing to help as much as I can with it. Suppose that for the tutorials, there could be a section (for download or streaming {depending on server allowances}) where there are video tutorials. I mean, not for the simple stuff, but for some of the more complex things. I would be willing to pour through the readme files for the more complex things and give a step-by-step video tut for them. Almost anyone that is using a remote server is using a MySQL setup so the tuts would be pretty universal. Or, at least the tuts could point that the video steps are in concerne to that.

All of it would take a bit of collaboration, but definately achievable. I would even be willing to give up some server space to host the tuts.

Main reason is that some people learn more from a visual interface, rather than reading. It could be kept simple from a perspective of doing things from a database interface or using an editor and then uploading them to the proper place.

One simple thing to start with would be running the SQL file properly. Another would be properly manually modifying files to include modifying lines of code that don't match exactly. Another obvious one would be how to back up your nuke DB BEFORE you do anything else (which should always populate top of list, haha).

I know this would be alot of work, but I am ready and willing to do something with it. Since flash is something that everyone has and almost always updates when they visit nuke pages, I think that would be the way to go in making the video tuts. The streaming ones would be a somewhat easier project vs the download version of them that would require them to know where to get a player that plays the flv files after they download them (well, from a NooB perspective).

Let me know if you are interested in doing something with this idea.

yeah i have been looking at this for a while and pondered on it for even more !

whilst i agree its easier to learn for most watching a visual demonstration we would have to look into it in more detail.

Size of the vids isn't that much a problem as we have a great hosting deal, but stopping idiots from tapping into our bandwidth might be an issue that i would need to speak to floppy with..

I have just got camtasia studio 4 whis seems amazing to be honest and it might be worth at least having a go to see if its beneficial or not...

One of the down sides is they can be very time consuming to make, but its defiantly worth looking into

I think I remember seeing something somewhere on how to prevent people from streaming your content remotely, except by code designated sources. I will have to search around and see if I can remember where I was reading something about it. In the meantime, though, we could try to make something over something quite simple to get a feel for the style of the vid and maybe test out some various video formats to see which is most effective concerning quality vs size.

I can see how stealing bandwidth could be a problem. I was with a host once that offered HotLink protection within the cPanel but I'm not sure how good that is. Or you could go with something a bit more professional like: http://www.xde.net/index.jsp?tool=hotlinkstop

With that sofware you can prevent linking to images/zip files/pdf etc.

I took a look at what you suggested Oz. Looks really nice. And, the price is not bad. It would be a great overall implementation for not just the tutorials, but for everything. As I am about to be hosting alot of underground music and video as well as hosting a 3D game, I think the $100 or so for the software would be perfect. As far as here, for the tuts and whatever, I think it would be great too.

Good find Oz.

At Ped --- Let me know what basic tut for testing you would like to start with so I can get started on playing around with my software to make something as a demo run of a video tut. I am pretty interested in helping out with this. Besides, people will get to hear my rough voice and see me make lotsa mistakes in clicking from place to place throughout the tutorial. Will make it fun to watch, haha.

First demo tut could be "How not to be a dumbass" Since I live in Oklahoma, I have ALOT of examples to woirk from, hahahahahahahahaha. (Joking. Oklahoma is not full of dumbasses. Well, unless you look at the scientific documentation presented throughout the college courses on business and education. Other than that, people here are perfectly functional and "smart") LMAO

you can stop hot linking with a simple text file called .htacsess ! lol no need to spend loads of money !

for example add this download file to your downloads

http://www.clan-themes.co.uk/archive/Clan_Themes_Module_And_Block.zip

then download it from your downloads module , see what you get

Amoungst the many ideas I have floating around my head for video tutorials, I am thinking about simply going through the phpnuke manual and chapter by chapter, making video tuts. Big project, I know, but one I am willing to start on.

So far, video tut projects are:

Backing up nuke things (sql tables, basic nuke backup, forum backup)
Modding HTML within nuke files for custom outcomes
Modding PHP within nuke files for custom outcomes
Building a theme of your own using a standard nuke installation
PHP Nuke, from beginning to end (Video tuts from beginning to end of manual)
XML standard for HTML
Modding flash headers, footers, and user bars
Modding PSD files in headers, footers, and custom userbars
Making your own cool avatar and sig
Basics of installing blocks and modules
Installation of advanced modules and blocks
Converting one nuke installation to a different one without losing your content (this will be the REALLY tough lengthy one to make)

This is all just off the top of my head. I have more written down somewhere, but since I wrote them on paper instead of typing them out, I don't know where it is, haha.

Please let me know if there is something more specific that someone is looking for that is more pressing. Likely they will figure it out before I can find the time to make the vid tut, but it will be there to help future users having problems with that process.

Also, I am learning some things with Python and SQL. When I get more knowledge, I can make something to help those that have some things that they would rather use Python with. I am convinced that there is a great way to intergrate Python with PHP to make a better Nuke. That is way down the road though.

PM me if there is a tut you are more interested in seeing first. PM flow will dictate to me the order of the project list. Also, you can contact me on messenger if you want to talk about a tut or just talk in general. My addys are on profile. I use trillion, so I stay connected to AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. Or you can contact me via my site at http://shixter.com

Adding banners is a popular request

there are a few different banner modules though so there would be 2 or 3 vids required for the different type of module used , of the top of my head i can think of 3 different banner modules:

1 Standard banners module
2 NSN banners
3 Advertisement module

there are 3 other purchased ones i can think of too but they come with instructions

1) WS banners
2) NSN Clients
3) Codewizz Banners

i bet there is more, but its a dam pain when people say how do i add a banner, the principle is very easy it just depends on which dam module they are using ! lol

I think ravens new distro v2.10 has just implemented a new one too so that might be 7 .... Dont Know

I must say that vid tutes are an excellent idea.

I went to Booksamillion yesterday, who i would imagine have about....oh...i dont know...maybe...a million books and they did not have anything on nuke alone. They had some that referenced nuke but thats it.

and...

I've noticed that many mods out there are either lacking with instructions, have mis interpreted instructions, or are designed with the person downloading them having as much knowledge as the person designing them.

I am willing to help you all out as far as being a test subject for these. I am pretty new at this, but I am becoming more familiar with things, thanks to Clan-Themes and a few other forums that I've been on.

@ Ped: I will add banners to the list of tuts. I will do some specific ones on modules that are made, but I will probably do another one that just simply covers the overall idea of adding banners to a site.

@ Ali: Appreciate the offer. I will let you know when I have something put together.

if this was planned properly you could have a very popular site shixter and i mean properly planned to theme to custom modules ect ect

the only downside to vid tuts is they eat bandwidth and i don't think people would really want to pay for them, that being said if i was starting out from noob again i prob would.... provided i got 1 free "sample" first of the quality of vids you made

i think it might work, but as with these things its not going to be a hit over night your prob looking at a good year before u might see a good few hits

what were your intension's just vids ?

KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid i would delve into the old nuke master biggest downloads on the web i would just concentrate on the biggest collection of tutorials to be honest...

Well, with every tut that I make I plan to have a seperate section to simply download the tut and play it via the player that I will either make or just add (some simple free flv player from another site). I would encourage people to download the tuts rather than stream them since they can view them in their own time rather than navigate to my site everytime.

Also, I will add a tut on making your own video tuts incase someone has something to add that has been overlooked or just in general. I haven't been to a single site yet that tells you how to make your own video tuts from your desktop to help other developers. I have seen massive amounts of video tuts on how to accomplish this and that, but not one on how to make your own.

Once I get the job change I am about to do, I will be full steam on the tuts. In the meantime, let the ideas flow. My list is growing. This will be great fun!! Very Happy

BTW, my overall aim is to do all this for free. I don't think people should have to PAY for knowledge. The payment is in their contribution and enlightenment. I simply love to see people learn. And, if I can be some help in any small way, then, that is my reward.
