Post Site compromised? Posted: Sat Jun 06, 2009 12:52 pm

Thought everyone might be interested to know that this site appears to have been compromised. I base the assumption on the fact that I provided a disposable address that is unique to this site for registration and I am now getting SPAM sent to it. That tells me that either one of two things has happened. Either the address was sold to a spammer or the site was compromised and the address was harvested. Because I don't think the administration here would sell the address, then that leaves the site having been hacked. If that's the case, then it's likely that my address was not the only one obtained.

The administration might want to check into this.

Regards
Roger

AS far as im aware, robots crawl the net looking for emails and collate them into a database, so they can send emails/spam.

I/We would never ever dream of sharing or selling anything to anyone... its just not going to happen.. it would be classed as internet privacy or breach of confidentiality and we dont even want to think anything along those lines... just daft.

This site would not have been compromised, not that im aware of anyway, Mack (Floppy) can verify that.. but i highly highly doubt it.

Don't think that, since you gave your email to nobody else and this is the only place you use it means your not going to get spam, it's not going to happen. Don't forget, if you get a bit of spyware on your PC and you don't know about it and you go to your email or have your email bookmarked, or is your browser history, now they know about it. There are bots that crawl around on email sites and report back any emails. There are literally thousands of different ways they can get email address besides from a site you registered on.

We had this discussion with one guy about 6 months ago where he was registered on this site for like a year and a half and then he started getting spam to his email. I told him if it was going through this site, then he would have been getting the spam for the last past year and a half.

The email address I have for this site . I am lucky if I get 2 spam mails in a month, which I had happening before I registered. So I am doubting that its from here. Smiley

This is floppy, so what I did to test these allegations is create a brand spanking new email and user, wait for spam. I am almost 99.9% sure you are mistaken, but since its so easy to test, why not.

Also you may want to consider going into your admin-modules and start resetting your modules to registered members. Do this especially for your forums and anything that gives a permission to place stuff on your site.

Also, you didn't post what version you were using to be able to truly identify the problem(s).

I think you misunderstood, he is implying that CT has been compromised.

Although your argument about the existence of spyware on my machine(s) is valid, I don't think it applies for the following reasons. First, I've been using unique disposable IDs for any site that requires registration for at least the last five years. During that time, I've had less than ten IDs start receiving SPAM. Most of those were on PHP Nuke sites. Having hosted a PHP Nuke site previously, I know from perusing its logs, that hacks are possible and the information can be retrieved without anyone's knowledge (unless of course your monitor the log files). Second, with your spyware scenario, I should also be receiving spam on any or all of the emails for the sites I go to an a daily/weekly/monthly basis. I've not. I don't think I've even been to this site in the last couple months. I know spammers try to use new IDs as soon as they harvest them while they're hot, because they know they should still be active. Therefore, my address from this site was probably retrieved very recently. If they were to have gotten the address from me, they would have gotten long ago.

Shop Purchases:
Call of Duty 4 SAS Theme

since signing up to CT i have not recieved a single spam email from here dont get me wrong i do get spam emails but no one can pin point them from here! like ped said people use bots/crawlers to retrieve this info and it is all saved and then they will send those emails .

I done some research aswell and it takes a matter of 30 minutes for someone to retrieve 100's of emails then minutes to send them junk/spam emails its all common in the internet world and is surprising how they do it and how easy one could learn how to do it.

Also if this site had been compromised/hacked would they not have done what most hackers do and add pop ups aswell? that is more common than anything else,And seeing how big CT is i think they may have done more than that i think if someone hacked this site i think they would do it only to do harm to the site to cause havoc to the owners.

anyway just my thoughts
