Post Move php-nuke site to ravens nuke ? Posted: Sun May 17, 2009 9:07 pm

I am currently running a gaming guild site using Php-nuke 8.0

After reading alot of forums it seems there are a lot of security problems with standard php-nuke. Can I migrate my site to Ravens? If possible how hard is it?

Instead of converting over to a new CMS look forthe updates for your version and apply them.

Also, you might want to look into a more specialized verion along the lines of the Evolution CMS line if you are set on a change.

both Evolution and RavenNuke are great CMS to go with, thou I am disappointed with this latest version. Not to offend anyone, but they really did a crappy job at the upgrade, its more like a failed attempt at what Evo has.

I have ran conversions and downgraded both from 8.0 to Evo and RavenNuke. Since your running a gaming site, your better off going with Evo since it has allot with it, also it converts more easily then Ravennuke.

It's possible to make a clan/guild site out of any version of nuke. I was recently impressed by an SMF site administered by a clan.
http://www.texasteamplayers.com

I personally don't care for any version of Evo. Although it makes it very customizable and versatile too many options in the admin area makes it way too overwhelming for most people in my opinion.

I'm curious as to what version in particular snype has read about that has a lot of security problems. The original phpNuke? phpNuke 8.0 is a decent system.

The CMS you decide to go with is totally personal preference. Check all of them out and see which one you like best. Unfortunately some versions will just end up being a waste of your time, due to your preferences on what you want it to do, but it's worth spending that time to find what's best for you, isn't it?

Am lost lol? Confused

php-nuke is not the most secure nuke and many including myself would advise against it and will allways say go with the two most secure ravensnuke and nuke-evolution choosing either one of these two will save alot of hassle in the long run

Versions of phpnuke later then 7.6, including the 8.x series is very unsecured and have allot of security holes. For someone saying that they are is I am sorry to say, a tad bit foolish. I had a 7.9 site and I did all security patches, also did a few extra security preventions and I was still hacked. I ended downgrading to RavenNuke and then eventually went over to Evo.

I do agree its all personal preference, but for security reasons, the top 2 out there is RavenNuke or Nuke Evolution.

As for Evo being overwhelming, I will have to disagree. I made the transaction to evo quite well. As did my admins. I have now ported over 30+ sites for customers from CMS such as Nuke 7.X and 8.X, as well as RavenNuke and Platnium, and them going to evo was and easy transaction. I think the average person just over complicates everything rather then taking the time looking at it and learning it. It's not like you were toilet trained over night, you had to learn how to use it, and now you will joke towards how easy it is, but if you can remember that far back, (highly doubt it), it was probably the hardest thing ever. I say if you can run RavenNuke, Platnium, or Nuke, then you can run Evo.

They are all based off of the original phpNuke from php-nuke.org. They are all the same, basic, language. And they all (no matter what version you choose) have a security hole somewhere. If a hacker wants to destroy something, if they're determined enough, they eventually will. All versions of nuke whether it's evo, ravens, platinum, 8.0, fusion, etc have updates to their security systems. The systems that still have support come out with a security update when a new hole is found.

Nothing foolish about my statement. I take offense to that. If you are constantly being hacked perhaps you did something inappropriate to someone that ticked them off and you're being targeted. hehe maybe you called someone a name, like "fool" that you shouldn't have?

I have and know of 7.6 sites that have been up since 2001 and haven't been hacked yet. Even with some of them being in the top 3 of a google search. http://www.ghosthounds.com is an example.

Your site being hacked depends a lot on who you are, how you treat your guests Embarrased , and the content you have on it.

some of what you say maybe true about security holes in any CMS but not all of the authors can say they have patched over 20,000 holes,errors..... like ravens can. and the main reason most sites get hacked is not because you are being targeted by an individual that dont like you, alot of hackers will search for php-nuke once they find what version you have they will then try and exploit it the best way is through un-secured modules that are out dated and lets say some just do it for the challange or to go back to there community and boost that they done this and got into that site, i know this because i have friends that are "ethnical hackers" that dont do it to exploit a site and then deface but they do it to help the web master out tell them of security they find and evan help fix them.

I meant no offense towards you, but what I said is true. But if you are going to sit there and tell me that they are secured and safer then Rn and or Evo, then I will say it out loud, you are a fool. Nuke 7.9 - 8.X I know to be big in security flaws, and for someone to say that they are secured is probably one in the same that will sit here and say vWar is secured, once you do all the security fixes people set out, even when the developers will tell you that it is very unsecured even with the fixes.

Yes, I know they all have there holes and security flaws, but compared to Evo or RN, 7.9 - 8.X are Swiss cheese with security holes. I and about 90% of the nuke community would agree when I say, its better to go with something that is more secured then base model nuke. I wouldn't be where I am here if I didn't know that RN and Evo are based after phpnuke 7.6. But for 2 places that strive to fix as snipe said, over 20,000 security holes that well, allot still linger in the base nuke 8.x, I would have to say that they are more secured and would recommend any day over a CMS that still lacks in fixing the holes.

As for my site, when I was getting hacked. It was because someone went out looking for any Nuke site running 7.9 or 8.0, so they could upload "Fishing Files". They didn't care who you were, just looking for those CMS. I even contacted the guy that got through my security and he did reply to me, he stated to me that he was looking for any site that he can get into to make money. He was using my site to get peoples bank information. I did inform raven and a few other how he got in and that was patched up already in the RV and Evo version, but not in the 7.9+. Before saying anything, yes, I had sentinel and the latest patches, but it still made no difference in stopping him.

I didn't say one version was more secure than another. They all have their pros and cons. It is up to the web master to decide which version fits their purpose(s) best.
