I pay for mine.. very cheap about £10 a year but it gives you an external login for admin, allowed to add mods bans etc etc..
after a lot of searching found it worth the £10 depending on how many idiots you get and how much you use it

What CMS are you running? I am asking because Evo has in the supplementary folder a shout box that I installed on my site in less then a min, and I have had absolutely no problems with it.
