Post Nuke 7.9 vs evo? advice, please? Posted: Sun May 25, 2008 11:45 am

Hi guys. Basically, I just need a little advice.

I run our clansite and it's built on Nuke 7.9. I spent a lot of time on it, not that you'd know it, and it has a few bells and whistles like Arcade 3.0.2 and integrated Coppermine, plus a bunch of other bits and bobs.

Most other clans use Nuke Evo 2.0.5 and I would like to try it. I was going to install it in a seperate directory but I'm concerned about the evo.htaccess and evo.staccess files that I have to edit. I know I have those files elsewhere on the site but I don't know if I'm using them, if that makes sense. The install guide kind of scared me away with...

You will find a file called evo.htaccess in the html folder. If you do not have any .htaccess on
your web server, you may simply rename the evo.htaccess file to .htaccess. If you have already an
existing .htaccess file on your web server, you may want to merge the content together in order to
keep all settings intact.

Am I safe to use it or not? Will I blow up my PHPNuke 7.9 site by doing so, is my first question.

Then there's the question of installing things like integrated Coppermine on Evo; will they work on Evo?

If I could answer the first one, I'd know the second one, you know?

Lastly, is it worth moving to Evo from 7.9?

Hope I've pasted in the right section... Dont Know

.htacess and .staccess are ( Added Security ) files... by default install, they are disabled...

they are designed to prevent browsers from accessing directories or file specifically if set.... It really comes down to 'Choice' if you want to use them or not. Personally, i use them on my sites to prevent people from accessing images directly, which isnt 100% fool Proof, but as closes to security as i need to go.

No the files will NOT effect 7.9 unless those files reside in directories you need to allow access.

EVOs module port system is diffrent then nuke 7.9, luckily there are SEVERAL sites out there that provide add-on modules, blocks, and scripts specifically designed for Evo, and yes, there are a few that offer coppermine.

not sure about 'Worth it'...it really comes down to ( Preference ) as for clan features..most clans use Evo, because there are more 'Clan Based Programmers' involved with nuke evolution then any other pre-built CMS...evo also has a larger list of clan based scripts already completed then any other distro.

You will not recieve help from me if i have to go digging for your CMS information and version, If i have to take the time to play 21 questions, then you can take the time to google! No Copyright, no support either!

Well put Bayler, as I do agree it is a "Preference" issue. I see so many posts where there is a slant one way or the other. Even in mine I try to point out the pro's and con's and ofter my preferences do show.

Either way he goes he needs to decide what his "Preferences" are going to be when it comes to these CMS systems.

I just ran across an updated 1.4 version of Coppermine ported for Nuke, unfortunately their forums were down and the site was being maintenanced. Also there appears to be a version of Coppermine specifically geared for EVO. But I have my doubts as to how much it was actually "worked" on by those over at Nuke Evolution. I tested a previous 1.4 version I picked up from the Coppermine site (at least I think it was) and it worked wonderfully. I didn't have a single problem out side of what was already known issues from that version or the 1.3.c version which I tested later as well.

the Evo Version of Coppermine was nothing more then a successful 'Port' by the Evo Team...it was geared to operate from the defined 'Settings' by the webmaster of a Nuke Evolution Website....

I will give credit to their Port Team...they tried their damndest to make sure the module was secure. ( Any time a module allows interaction with file transfers to the server, it poses a list of security exploit possibilities ) !!!
