Post Random forum vanishing act: not sql - Posted: Thu Apr 24, 2008 3:57 am

Any help or insight into this problem of ours will be greatly appreciated!

We are using PHPNUKE 8.0 and our forum code is : phpbb2 forums port version 2.0.5 (c) 2003.

Every now and then, our forums VANISH.... but, the rest of the website that is tied to the same MySQL server, continues to work fine.

I have not been able to isolate any "trigger" event that could be causing this.

When the forums vanish, the page simply does not load that center forum "block" - and it also loads nothing past it (the right column blocks, or the footer).

This could happen 1 time a week, on average... sometimes we go longer without it happening, sometimes it is two days in a row...
Then, the duration of the "outage" seems random. Sometimes it is 30 minutes. Sometimes it is a few hours.
I have no idea how to get the forums to come back up. Then, for some unknown reason.... POP... the forums are back up and running fine.

I don't know much about error codes - but, I'll post some below that showed up during the time the forums were down - just in case it means something to you:

[Wed Apr 23 09:54:06 2008] [error] PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class sql_db in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/html/db/mysql.php on line 0

[Wed Apr 23 09:54:06 2008] [error] PHP Warning: main(): Failed opening 'modules/Forums/includes/functions_view_or_mark_unread_posts.php' for inclusion (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/html/modules/Forums/common.php on line 179

[Wed Apr 23 09:54:06 2008] [error] PHP Warning: main(modules/Forums/includes/functions_view_or_mark_unread_posts.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/html/modules/Forums/common.php on line 179

[Wed Apr 23 09:53:18 2008] [error] PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class sql_db in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/html/db/mysql.php on line 0

not 100% sure what the problem is but....

I know for sure that that (modules/Forums/includes/functions_view_or_mark_unread_posts.php) is not a nukebb file, all the incudle files for nukebb are in the folder ROOT/inculudes.

What i think is:

1: you have tried to update your nukebb forum with the standalone version of phpbb.

2: u have in installed a mod that uses files and the script cant find the path to them.

this is my theory but not 100% sure as i haven't gone near nuke 8.0 because im a raven nuke lover.

But then why do u only get errors a few times a week ? very strange. maybe someone else might have a better idea because ive never seen this file ( functions_view_or_mark_unread_posts.php ) in any nuke install.

Sounds about right to me.
Believe it or not *nukes footer file also calls the right blocks so a gremlin in the footer file or just before footer is called will certainly cause this.
As it only seems to do this periodically I would (without seeing the site) suspect that either your footer or one of the right side blocks is using external data such as google ads or an RSS feed (or something similar). If the site cannot load this external data it will cause this exact type of problem.

Thanks for the help -
I'll keep punching at this til it complies with my demands.

Just had another forum vanishing act a few minutes ago - these same errors showed up:

Ok -
I have determined that the forum vanishing act is tied to this one error:

[Sat Apr 26 01:02:33 2008] [error] PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class sql_db in /home//public_html/html/db/mysql.php on line 0

And that it is NOT related to the functions_view_....

That file was simply in the wrong includes folder... but has been moved and that corresponding error taken care of.

However, the forums remained vanished.

Each time someone would try to access the forums, or I would refresh the page, the error message above would repeat.

Then, about an hour or so later, POOF! The forums are back up..... Sarcastic

OK here's an interpretation of the error.

The crash is caused by trying to re-declare the class sql_db
It looks like the error is looping and actually crashing the whole server (not good).

The file: modules/Forums/includes/function_view_or_mark_unread_posts.php
is not a standard *nuke path so it looks like you have maybe added a phpBB mod instead of one ported for *nuke.

The above file is being called by modules/Forums/common.php

So I would start looking at common.php as that is where the problem is originating. Have you made any modifications to that file recently?

But - when I corrected the function_view_or_mark... etc... error... (file was in wrong place) that entire line of error messages stopped occurring.
Ha!
Yaaaay! I thought I had solved the whole thing!

Then - the other redeclare error started showing up again (another random occurance) - but this time it was entirely independent of the error that referenced the common.php file and the function, etc...

So - that had nothing to do with it, seemingly...

Which just makes the redeclare error all the more mysterious... !!!

Retard

Well as I said, the function_view...unread.php was in the wrong place because common.php was looking for it in the wrong place. so common.php should have had the path corrected to look for it in the correct place - presumable it should have been webroot/includes/ and no webroot/modules/Forums/includes/

Any how, your fix seems to have cured your problem so all is right with the word - provided the function... unread.php file is not calling anything else that has a relative path otherwise that will be out again.
